Selections from Kālidāsa’s
Abhijñānaśakuntalam

Background.

This passage comes from the beginning of Kālidāsa’s most well-known play, the Recognition of Śakuntala (Abhijñānaśakuntalam). The king Duṣyanta is hunting deer, as kings do, in the forest.

This selection is found in Father R. Antoine’s Sanskrit Manual (the whole book is downloadable here; this selection can be found in PDF format here).

Annotations.

tat sādhukr̥tasaṁdhānaṁ pratisaṁhara sāyakam | ārtatrāṇāya vaḥ śastraṁ na prahartum anāgasi || 6 ||
